Once we chose a company we wanted to make sure that we were creating the best home security that we could. We wanted the best we could get, because we are gone so often. We wanted to have some degree of security when we were gone. The last thing we wanted to do was have to worry thousands of miles from home. Nobody in our immediate circle of friends has an alarm system, so we had nobody to ask about home security that could refer a reliable company. We called one more company, and this time a sales person came out with a technician of some sort. They spend a lot of time here, marking this and that on a PC and looking at spreadsheets that I imagine had rate quotes on them. Deb had a number of questions for the sales person, and she went through each one. I had to take a business phone call, so I didn't hear most of the reply. When I cam back out I was surprised to find that they had left. I asked Deb about what had happened and she said that she was really impressed with this company. So we had narrowed it between two companies, and we had to make a choice fairly soon.

BLIZZARD OF THE CENTURY

Home Depot Organizers were the ones that Debbie wanted to see first. We had three Home Depot stores within about 5 miles. We picked the one furthest out first, so we could work our way back. This proved to be not such a great plan. The weather was great when we started, but then snow started to come down and it turned into a blizzard. At first it wasn't bad. Then the wind started to blow and the visibility went down to zero. I was afraid to pull over because of the traffic. And I couldn't even see the curb or a parking lot or a side street. We just kept creeping along and finally I could make out a small lot. It turned out to be a church parking lot. As soon as we pulled in the snow stopped. Call it a miracle, I guess. In a few moments we were able to go on our way. The first Home Depot we got to was out of the one organizer that Debbie was really interested in, so we went on to the second, working out way back home. When we got to the second Home Depot it was snowing again. It was slow when we went in, but when we came out it was really bad again.

I have spent a lot of money and a lot of time looking into various doctors and clinics regarding lasik eye surgery. Tara and I both believe that they eyes are most important, and that you can't take chances with them. We both traveled to a number of states and looked into these clinics. Though we had a good time traveling to these places we didn't find the one right doctor or clinic. Not yet, anyway. There was a good doctor in California and in Texas, but they are a long way away, especially for follow up visits. We decided to take a break in looking and just get some things done around the house. Things that we had been neglecting. I need to get the garage cleaned, and Tara had some make over she wanted to do in the family room. Besides, the weather is so bad and so cold, that we don't have any more energy left to get on a plane and go somewhere. I'm good with it. Jim came through with some referrals, but I'm going to just sit tight. Jim did help me with the garage. I had a lot of old stuff that I didn't know what to do with. He actually took a few things, like my old wet vac and car ramps.

STOP THE PRESSES

People with sight related problems find eyeglasses their regular companion. If one has problem of near sightedness or far sightedness then there is no freedom from glasses. One can see people from all age groups who are dependent on glasses for normal and unadulterated vision. Without glasses it becomes quite difficult for them to carry out normal day-to-day activities. There are many people who do not like to wear glasses but cannot avoid it due to their vision problem. Technology has advanced quite a lot over the years and with the advancement in technology science has found answer for those who detest their eyeglasses. It is possible now to have normal vision even without glasses for those who suffer from myopia and hyperopic. This can be done with the help of LASIK eye surgery. LASIK surgery is a very modern form of eye surgery in which excimer laser rays are used to remodel the tissues in the eye. LASIK is a permanent solution to those who suffer from problem of vision. LASIK has been a breakthrough discovery, which has enabled many patients to throw away their glasses and get freedom from them. LASIK is not only less painful than the other conventional surgical procedures but it also heals quickly.

DOING MY RESEARCH

By the time I was finished doing my research on diabetes treatment plans, I was totally confused. I realized that this was not something that you can do on your own. I had not wanted to get involved with checking in with a doctor every week or so, but it looks like there is no way around that. There are at least three major medical centers around me, teaching hospitals with the latest in treatments for just about any disease you can think of, and quite a number of community hospitals that offer classes on helping you. In the end I decided to go with a local program I am not too highly motivated to keep to this diet and exercise, so if the location I had to work with was far away, I knew I wouldn't. I do realize that many people can get by without a support system, but I know myself, and I would stray way too easily. My first meeting with the group is next week. I'm going to try to get out of work early and be back home first. Watch, I'll probably run into my neighbors there, and we can all be sick together, then go home and pretend we never saw each other there.

MAKING THE HEADLINES

It's a shame when things like this happen, but they do. Tom called me and wanted to know if I knew a personal injury attorney in California. I said that I had a few friends who were lawyers, and that I would check. I called and talked to some of them, and they referred me to other lawyers and to the California Bar Association. I checked out some of the web sites and profiles, and I sent them to Tom. He emailed later and said that he was grateful, but he was going to have to have a real high profile attorney, because this was a difficult case and would have to be fought through the system but also through the media. He needed someone who was media savvy as well as really up on the latest law. I wished him luck. Imagine my surprise when I turn on the TV and I see he is making headlines. He is getting his 15 minutes of fame, or whatever. I called him this time, instead of emailing. I asked him what had happened. We spent the next hour on the phone while he described the problems I just couldn't believe it. The news channels didn't get any of it right, but I'm not too surprised about that. After about 24 hours the story cycled out of the news, but I'm sure it will be back because of who is involved.

SUNDAY PAPER

All of the ads that sell a hair transplant, it seems, are in the back of Sunday supplements. I remember a few years ago thumbing through the Sunday paper at the doctor’s office and being totally unable to believe how many different ads there were in the magazine section, just before all the summer camp ads and just after all the “Send us $20 and we’ll send you a book on how to make a million” ads. There must have been at least fifty. “Revitalize your scalp,” said one. “We’ll make a new man out of you!” And then I think another one claimed that you’ll look 30 years younger when you try our new product. It said that your hair will grow back within days. That was when I noticed that the Girl Scout camp I had gone to had a new director. It wasn’t Jeanne anymore. It was the same camp but with a different person’s name in the ad. I wondered what had happened to Jeanne and some of those girls whom I never saw again after the two summers I went to the camp, up in the north woods of Wisconsin. That’s why I remember all those hair removal and hair growth ads. Forgive me for being sentimental, but sometimes—when I have nothing else to do—I think about my childhood and wonder what happened to all those strange people.
